IDEAS: Design Solutions

This theme concept was developed by and remains the intellectual property of Design Directions for Church School, Ltd. It is presented here for demonstration purposes only and may not be used without permission.

Here's an example of a theme developed by Design Directions for Church School, Ltd. Customizing the theme to an individual church is demonstrated clearly in this theme, where we wanted to tie into the Tree symbolism. Our Scripture for the model is Psalms 1:1-3. The children are located in four different hallways for Sunday School, thus the idea of "Paths" to lead them to their workshops.

Here is a verbal picture of our designed theme in action:

  • We will be Growing in Greatness as the children gather at the Tree House for the instructions of which workshop they go to each Sunday. They would see the Family Tree painted on the wall with leaves that say "Adam and Eve," "Noah," "Esther," "Moses," "Abigail," "Christ" and then leaves with the children's own names on them! Two acorns are attached to the children's leaves telling them which Path to take and which room to go into. The leaves are on branches by grade level for efficiency in dispersing the children.
  • On another wall of the Tree House is a sign that quotes Psalm 1:1-3. The walls look like the inside of a tree house with rough wood half-walls and nails as hooks to hold necessities. This sets the theme for the rest of the "forest."
  • The path the children take from the Tree House leads them to Radical Roots where they go back in time to see where they came from - the Synagogue, The Israeli Household, The Old World Map Room and Forty Years In the Desert (the Storytelling Tent).
  • The second path option is to go to Waters Alive! where children express their creativity in All Things Bright and Beautiful for creative artwork, All Creatures Great and Small for ecology, and Fruit Basket Upset! for kinesthetic movement and music.
  • On to The Swinging Vine where children can Hear It Through the Grapevine from countries all around the world. The computer/media area includes the Talking Bush computer room, Cable Grazing TV Studio, Dial 10-10-MONKEY chat room, and The Dream Team diversity workshop.
  • The Oak Branch Playhouse houses the puppet and drama workshops as well as the TreeTop Theater for movies and popcorn.
